Even though the cover art has been appropriated from Dead Space, this album is about as far removed from that masterpiece of survival horror as it’s possible to imagine.

That’s not to say that there isn’t a vague feeling of threat at listening to these songs, many of which carry with them more than a semblance of unease. Each track is built upon a single, metronomic, black-and-white guitar line which is then coloured in with a warm and wonderful voice that evokes some form of ancient ritualistic incantation.

It would be fair I think, to make comparisons to the earlier works of Bonnie Prince Billy, because not since “I See a Darkness” have I experienced the conflation of gently-played, lilting bluegrass music and the sort of other-worldly, vaguely supernatural lyrics on show here.

Much of this would have worked as a fantastic accompaniment to the first series of True Detective, which should give you as good an idea of its quality as anything else.
