I saw OK Go on the TV the other week. It looked like they were having fun in front of the girls and boys of the CD UK audience. At the time I never imagined I would be writing a review of their album – funny how things turn out isn’t it?

Sadly, OK Go owe more to the Andrew WK School of Rock than they do to the Promise Ring (one of the bands they’ve toured with, incidentally) University of Songsmithery. This self titled debut is fun, and for that reason I won’t write it off completely, but it’s dumb fun, the entire chorus of the opening track, ‘Get Over It,’ is just one word for God’s sake. “Hey!!” Vocalist Damian Kulash bellows over a sudden blaze of guitars, “G-G-G-Get over it!!” He cries to the world – who are probably shouting along with the sort of unbridled enthusiasm usually reserved for Justin Timberlake or some other mega-radio-star.

OK Go will probably do very well for themselves. These songs definitely belong on the radio and even though I hate to admit it, I found myself humming the tune to ‘Don’t Ask Me’ the other day in a haze of brief euphoria. It’s just that I don’t want to listen to music that reminds me of how much a better time the singer is having than me, if I’m feeling skint I don’t want someone singing ‘You’re So Damn Hot’ in my face all the time.

Anyone who likes Weezer, or the Beach Boys or The Vines will probably be able to find a nice home for this one, I think I must just be too miserable.
