It's nice, for the past few years there hasn't really been any bands around that do that whole Van Pelt style thing, with the talky vocals and wandering post-whatever guitars. You could rock out the originals, or if you fancied a bit of variety you'd stick a Kolya record on. Then all of a sudden this year, which is 2003, we have been gifted with not one, but two bands that play this kind of thing brilliantly. Firstly there was Sinaloa, who made my favourite lp of the year with their wonderful "Fathers and Sons", and now we have Signal to Trust, who have committed 3 songs to 7". The first one is "the Great and Terrible King", I love the lyrics here which are basically a story that connects to the line "an active imagination is so important". That's a great line. The vocals are all spoken in a strong and urgent fashion, really keeping the voice balanced well with the quirky indie rock rhythms and grooves bubbling all around. On side B is a song about Chess, and this one has a different style both musically and vocally, it's faster and more melodic and the vocals are more subdued. I love the bass on this track as it surges along amidst the dischordant and messed up guitars. Finally is "Victory Over the Sun", I don't really know what this one is about but I like the lyrics again for some reason. I think this band are obsessed with animals. It is a slow building talker that again utilises the strong bass and great vocals.

This 7" is right ace.
