I don't know if I'm getting weak or going soft in the head, but there's been a slow trickle of tuneful, overwrought, prog-infused stuff that I've been going pretty wild about lately; bands like Mutoid Man, Triclops!, East Of The Wall and So Is The Tongue all getting me far frothier than I really feel they should. Wild Throne (née Dog Shredder, unfortunately) are the latest bunch, this three-track 12" a really belting slice of warbly, über-proficient Rock Music that bowls me over every time I spin it. Riffs surge and soar, darting between hefty crunch, Tom Morello-style ZX Spectrum shrieks and playful musicality while the singer oozes his way between a syrupy Shudder To Think croon and something slightly growlier. Despite their complexity the songs are overloaded with catchy hooks and there's a real dynamism on display that makes each song genuinely exciting, even after repeated listens. It really is quite the little marvel, and I think a full-length record would be a very tasty prospect indeed.
