Mammoth outpouring from this long-defunct UK punk band who I’d never previously heard of. These gals and guys existed in some form or other from ’83 to ’88 and the sound (particularly on the guitars) is very ‘of a time’ indeed punchy, melodic, punk rock that was political but retained a sense of fun and playfulness that rarely threatened to override the songwriting. The band’s cross-pollination with the likes of Leatherface and Sofa Head makes perfect sense, but the entertaining and in-depth liner notes reveal that they also played a stack of shows with gnarlier types like Conflict, Anti-Sect and Amebix which is something of a head-turner considering how starkly regimented many punk rock gigs seem nowadays. 64 tracks is, admittedly, a lot to wade through, but all in all there’s a surprisingly high hit ratio, making this a more than sturdy effort that’s well worth investing some time in.
