Another record that refuses to be classified with a couple of irreverent phrases and an unfunny one-liner. Curses! Maybe this is penance for whining churlishly about hearing too many bands that sound like Orchid or Usurp Synapse? Who can tell. Not me, so I’ll shut the hell up.
So to start with I thought this was going to be an emo record. A grainy, skewed photograph of nothing in particular just screams such things at me. Instead, an instrumental leads the way before lurching into some droning guitar rock that sounds somewhere near Earth did on their “Pentastar’ record. Warm guitar riffs repeated and rarely changed with a wave of groaning, funereal baritones over the top. Sometimes things heat up and tempers seem to flare, fissures resembling Neurosis (especially when the guy roars like a bear) or Isis appear, but never proving as ferociously doom-laden as either. Churning, pulsating and almost gargantuan. Almost epic. Almost. Just not quite. Because this time around the band is just good as opposed to great, failing to either well and truly submerge me in the noise they’re making or drag me through an emotional hedgerow. Too bad.
