Alkaline Trio - Goddamnit - CD (1999)

Labels: Asian Man Records
Review by: Ian Cavell

Powerful and emotional. If I had to choose two words to sum up this exceptional album – I’d pick those two. ‘Goddamnit’ is a potent blend of emo punk-pop and melodic hardcore the likes of which beats pretty much everything else I’ve heard that you could slot into either of those genres. From the more punk orientated efforts such as ‘As You Were’ and ‘Cop’ to the acoustic ‘Enjoy Your Day’ (which employs your typical emo-core vocals) through to the melodic hardcore of the superb ‘Trouble Breathing’, this album should have a big “QUALITY MUSIC” sticker stamped across it as a warning.

The album reaches its zenith with tracks such as ‘San Francisco’ which is both explosive and fragile, ‘My Little Needle’ with the awesome buzzsaw guitar intro and tragic lyrics (“…and beg change from a world that needs some”) and the epic ‘Southern Rock ‘ with its towering chorus and jagged melodies. ‘Goddamnit’ is the perfect album and I really can’t recommend it highly enough.
