“Who Could Win a Rabbit” sounds like some rare Joe Meek produced band from the 60’s but the master-tapes are totally fucked and the bizarre LSD influenced psychadelia sounds very wrong but beautiful.
It’s this conflict that really helps to make a record, much as a band like Darkthrone are better off with an appalling recording (is it just me that a dirty extreme band sound better recorded as such?). The conflict in question on this particular record is one of pop structure versus the avant garde. You see Animal Collective are playing music influenced by pop bands of yesteryear such as Love, the Beach Boys… but they are pushing boundaries at the same time which is what avant garde is all about.
“Baby Day” is somewhere in-between their recent gigs played here (tour with Mum, Eat Your Own Ears Night etc…) and the Campfire Songs CD. It’s almost tribal but with the spiritual ethic and sense of knowledge there is a very real sense of naivety.
