So this is a bit of an odd one for me. Being the C’s token angry straight edge guy, stoner rock is not something I’m exposed to that much, but it was sent to me for review by a very nice man who apparently think’s my opinion really matters. Fool!
Ok, despite me using the term ‘stoner rock’ already this is way more fun and poppy than I usually would expect of that sort of thing, guess I it’s more sort of (mostly) up beat punchy alterna-rock and roll but with some of the same influences as a lot of those bands, for example there’s occasionally a bit of early Soundgarden creeping in there (more ‘Full on Kevin’s Mom’ than ‘Pretty Noose’) and is in general very very riffy, which to me at least, is massively preferable to some of the more garage rock styled takes on the theme recently. They also sound like they enjoy what they do, crikey!
The production on this record is also spot on, not super slick or anything but clean and sharp enough to give it plenty of life and spark, listening to shouty punk everyday you can sometimes forget the value of such things in the right circumstance, this is a good example of how it can be used well without being to ‘professional’…
Overall, recomended.
