Braid - Movie Music Vol. 1 - CD (2000)

Labels: Polyvinyl
Review by: Dan Kinnaird

Braid is what all bands wish they could be. Braid has released a two volume set of all their songs on their 7″s and all those hard-to-find compilations. The cds can be purchased separately but they both bear the same basic art design.

The first cd is all the 7″ and splits and dang, it feels so good. I think it’s the better of the two cds. It sports 17 freakin’ amazing songs and it’s got all the lyrics printed in the insert. I’ll resist the urge to review every song, but every song is good. Each song is different, so the whole cd doesn’t run together with similar sounding songs. The songs are on the cd in chronological order, so you can listen as Braid matures into what they were (since they broke up). This cd is kinda like Frame & Canvas in that it took some time to grow on me, but Movie Music 1 took a lot less time for some reason. The Braid fans out there with record players got the shaft, but those of us that rely on cds for music thank the Almighty in Heaven. Those with record players should pick this one up because those 7″s can’t be played sixty million times in a row (I don’t know if cds can either, but I’ll find out soon). The first lucky 1000 got a limited edition special picture box to hold the 2 cds, and it looks beautiful up on the cd rack in my room. This cd is arguably a better intro to Braid than Frame & Canvas. Whatever it is, it’s worth getting.
