Labels: No Idea Records
Review by: Andy Malcolm
Hmm, there is the familiar odour of burnt toast eminating from downstairs and I am beginning to wonder if it is at all connected to the fact that I am reviewing the Burnman LP here. Do you think? Do you think it’s so? Maybe, just maybe.
Ya know, I spent a while listening to this and trying to figure out who it sounds like. And eventually I had to settle on the fact that it sounded like 12 Hour Turn’s album crossed with Cornelius. They’ve got the controlled chaos set in stone, and are mixin’ it up with plentiful melodic emo grooves and powerful hardcore efficiency. Occasionally they slip into noodling over-complexity and end up falling on their backsides, but for the most part this record hits. And it hits at 45rpm, which instantly set off signals in my head before I even played it: “this is going to bed good”. So many LP’s that play at 45rpm are good. It’s a proven fact. The songs aren’t played at unstoppable pace, but they do tend to be over in a flash and don’t place lengthy demands on your attention.
If you are at all familiar with the mighty emo-ironists, I Hate Myself, then you’ll be super happy to hear that Burnman features 2 IHM guys who, rather surprisingly, still haven’t committed suicide, and are now playing this new style. It’s the same vocalist, and it’s a pleasure, nay, an honour, to hear his whinin’ screamy tones on vinyl again. What a star.
Burns: Smithers…are they booing me?
Smithers: Uh, no, they’re saying “Boo-urnman! Boo-urnman!
