So here it is, the debut solo lp from former Canyon/Farewell Bend/Boys Life front man Brandon Butler, I didn’t even know this existed until very recently but I managed to find a copy, and man, I am glad that I did.
This album is mostly more in line with the Canyon style acoustic country influenced stuff but seems a lot more direct and kind of warmer feeling than the Canyon cd I have. That stuff was cool but kind of weird and trippy, this is much more singer/songwriter-y, which I guess makes sense, however, much like Canyon and even later Boys Life it does give off this wierd kind of vibe of vast open spaces and deserts and stuff, while it is not in any way like Kyuss, he does sometimes create a similar atmosphere, albeit with Brandon’s take being a lot less intense, like if The Streets were from Nevada or something… or perhaps not, but deserts are very beautiful in their own weird way anyways. So this all can only be a good thing. I like the idea of genuine ‘wilderness’.
It does seem that when some Emos get old they tend to go country, but they usually do it well enough and this is a good example of it done better than average, and is recommended.
