Carrion - Beggar - 7

Labels: McCarthyism Records
Review by: Alex Deller

To be quite brazen with you, this thing is weird as fuck. Both songs are somewhere between a speedier version of Cavity and the rampant guitar histrionics of some Yngwie Malmsteem-styled guitar troubadour. Sludgy rock music peppered with unsettling neo-classical guitar twiddle. Then they have a knack for stopping and starting whenever the hell they darn well please, in some kind of satanic tip of the cap to the Touch & Go roster. Fuck knows what is going on with the singer. He sounds like Ozzy Osbourne might if he smoked more and sniffed glue for a living, with lyrics that could’ve been lifted from one of the first few Sabbath albums or at least one of the more serious Cathedral opuses. Like I said, the thing is weird. But in a good way. Because somehow the whole thing slots together rather well, and demands repeated play rather than a swift trip to dustbinville.
