Chariots - s/t - CD (2004)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

This is one of them dinky 3″ CD things. It has five songs on it. It is very tastefully packaged, though the lyric sheet on mine is a bit messily reproduced. Anyway, music. What you have is a frenzy of emo violence. Harsh, piercing vocals over blasting guitars and tinpot drumming. This is quite a mess of distortion and fuzz, but good with it. I love the production in fact, it really suits the music. Chariots don’t deviate away from any of the benchmarks of this style of music, I am sure most people who listen to this will be intimately familiar with the likes of Neil Perry and Joshua Fit For Battle, and they won’t be too disappointed with the sound that the band makes here. They sprinkle in a few nice twinkly and atmospheric breakdowns amidst the destruction and vocal puking, which is also a pretty by the book thing to do, but it works also. The third track has a super emo groove to it which it explodes into, everyone flailing around and sobbing and all that. My favourite part on the CD I reckon.

This is a fine piece of chaos that will appeal to connoseuirs of bands that sound like they have their faces are on fire. I am aging a little and has been a few years now since a good proportion of the music I listened to would sound exactly like this, but I can still appreciate this sort of thing when it’s done well, and Chariots have no trouble in that department.
