Charlottefield - Cove - split - 7

Labels: Jonson Family
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Last I checked, Collective was getting as few hits as ever, yet it seems that the worlds releasers of records are sending us much more free stuff to write about. This is a good thing, because it seems that finally we get a proportion of stuff that we actually like, which makes me right chuffed.

Charlottefield is a band I know the name of but I am not sure why, they do a song of angular mathematical post-hardcore knife wielding on here and I am happy to say it’s really pretty good stuff. It’s resplendent in it’s mathtaclar grooves, kissing the left buttock of Unwound at times but I have no problems with that, whilst throwing in a fairly staple DC bend on things. The vocals are that kind of screamy style where the guy is a bit away from the microphone (or they recorded it lower) because he yells but he sounds a bit far away you know? And the yelling doesn’t obscure the music. I used to go and see bands like this in Leicester all the while in ’98/’99, it reminds me very much of what certain UK indie bands were doing at that time. Maybe bands in the Uk have been doing that ever since, or for years before, I simply don’t know.

Cove are on the other side and they like Slint, or whatever. Bassy wanderings that are also of a DC nature. Actually they are bit Hoover-esque at times, but the vocals and whole build up of the thing made me compare them to the S bend, I mean band. They fit very well with the band on the other side of the record too and I think this is a fine track.

Nice split, there’s only 300 of these so if you are at all interested, go have a look for it.
