Clancy 6 - Vincent Price's Orphan Powered Death Machine - split - CD (2003)

Labels: McCarthyism Records
Review by: Alex Deller

Look me in the eye, tell me you didn’t buy a record featuring a band called “˜Vincent Price’s Orphan Powered Death Machine’ primarily because of their band name and I’ll call you a liar to your fucking face. For real. Me? Guilty as charged”¦

For some reason, the name “˜Clancy 6′ lends itself to images of bad pop punk. The kind of shit that every small town has cluttering the bills of tedious “˜battle of the bands’ contests, pedalling rehashed Vandals riffs and at least one “˜hilarious’ cover version. This particular Clancy 6 sounds nothing at all like that. They sound like hell on wheels. Fast screamed shit that recalls Combatwoundedveteran in their good ol’ days, before everything after “œI Know A Girl”¦” ever happened. Whether you need to own anything else like this is debatable, but I think its pretty alright. Harsh screams, silly lyrics about surgery and music that is a mess of body parts.
VPOPDM aren’t entirely dissimilar, though it sounds like they’re taking the piss a touch more. A flurry of almost directionless noise, low, throaty bellows and impossibly high pterodactyl screams, plus some weird sassy nu-new waveish vocals that sound like they got lost for a while and just found themselves in the wrong recording studio while all this was going on. The Ultimate Warriors meets early Spirit of Versailles with the Faint playing next door? Damned if I know and damned if I can really be bothered to find out.
