Welcome, Clinic, to my “best of 2004′ play list. Comprised of 25 songs (thus far) it is depressingly bereft of music with guitars in it. Clinic toys with sinister glam; the stomping drums pounding like a headache on a druggy night out. The voices approach from everywhere, whispered, around the corner and just out of reach. Suddenly the tension is cut, as promised; we are left with bass and vocals. Then we are pulled back into the hook.
Last year the “super-clubs’ were on a downward trajectory; dance music was on the ropes with cat calls of “you’re dead” coming from all corners. This year guitar music, indie music in particular, has been too quiet. It is refreshing to hear Clinic pick up its limp body and beat it back into life.
