Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth - CD (2003)

Labels: Equal Vision
Review by: Joey Keegin

Now I must say, before I go on, that I fucking love this band. I loved the first album and I love this new one. And if you have any problem with that then you can screw off.

The sophomore album from this New York prog/metal/rock band surpasses their first one, “The Second Stage Turbine Blade,” by leaps and bounds. While the first album was much more pop-punk-ish, this one definitely has more prog influence, especially by the almighty Rush – the only thing they are lacking are the odd time signiatures. Coheed has upped the complexity of their music by nearly 100%, and it shows in this new release. Most every song is epic, dynamic, and powerful. There are a few poppier bits on here (“Blood Red Summer,” “The Velorum Camper I: Faint of Hearts,” “A Favor House Atlantic”) but they are all still wonderful songs. This album even has a secret song (after 12 tracks of blank space – “A Whole Lot Of Nothing: I – XII”) which recalls certain songs from the first album (“Everything Evil,” “I, Robot”). Highlights from the album are the songs “In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3,” “The Crowning,” and “The Velorum Camper III: Al the Killer,” but every song is a gem. No filler, just 100% badass.

This album is by far my favorite album of the year.
