Cooper Brown - Watch This! - CD (2003)

Labels: self released
Review by: Mark Skold

It’s always nice to listen to good music. Especially if the band is making clear steps to do that whole “moving the sound along” thing without doing the “we sound nothing like we used to” thing. Enter Cooper Brown and another ep scratch in their discography bedpost.

It’s a six track CD and they’re letting you have it for two quid. According the the DIY gospel, this is a welcome gesture. Plus, this release sounds an awful lot more mature and less frantic than some of their previous stuff. The songs, while still very ROCK, have a very thoughtful feel to them.

However, not all the tunes have the impact one would expect. The tracks are not as hard hitting as their previous ones, but they are certainly more intelligent. There’s a couple bits where you are waiting for the song to kick off, and it doesn’t quite make it. There’s a couple bits where the sound is a little thin. But at the end of each song, you’re left feeling nicely fullfilled. Which is nice.

Thumbs up go to live fave “Hamburger” which is ace, and “Industry Standard” which is both tonge in cheek fun as well as great song.

The full-length “Friends with the President” is a much better and easier starting point to get into this band, but seasoned connoisseurs of Cooper Brown will appreciate and enjoy this one.
