Cooter - Looking Up - CD (2000)

Labels: Fast Music
Review by: Ian Cavell

Thirty seconds into this CD and my initial impression is that Cooter are so fucking generic that it hurts. US pop-punk is the name of the game here; Ataris, No Use For A Name; these are the bands that Cooter want to be. And sound wise, there are certainly more than a few similarities.

You’ll have to forgive my initial skepticism. You see, I’ve heard too many CDs by bands aspiring to be the next Lagwagon (or whoever), and falling a good couple of miles short. But thankfully, Cooter have the songs that elevate them above the other however many thousands of bands play this style of music. Just check out ‘Looking Up’, ‘Bite My Nails’ and the best track on here, ‘Friday Morning’.

Ok sure, there are times when this band slips back into mediocre clone land, but those times are few and far between. For the most part this is album is totally rocking, and a little tip for all the Fat Wreck wannabe bands out there. If you’re gonna make a US pop-punk album then take a cue from Cooter; make sure its fucking excellent!
