Cougar Party - s/t - CDR (2005)

Labels: cougar party
Review by: Andy Malcolm

I am reasonably certain that this band contains the 1/2 of Mach Tiver that is not in Beaumont Hamel, which is nice. Cougar Party romp through 4 tracks of hardcore/punk in a pretty raw fashion. Opener “Who Knows What Would Have Happened Had Their Van Not Blown Up in the Desert” jettisons any pretence at production, with hoarse screamed vocals, and chugging guitars that come across like a slightly more moshy sounding Shotmaker. No bad thing! After that there comes a couple of punkier efforts with urgent vocals crossing the sing/speak/shout spectrum, and a lot of straight forward punk rock guitar buzzing. “Disconnect” outdoes it in the simplicity stakes, though throws in some nice downbeat emo-ish moments. They finish up on the rousing “Lakeboat Fantasy” which has an awesome rolling structure (again rather Shotamker-y), before exploding into the screamy punk parts that come across like Moss Icon circa the first 7″. Best song on here.

So there you go, this is pretty interesting and it’d be neat to hear what their full length is like.
