Wow, this band is ex-Candy Land Car Crash! Heh, don’t worry if that doesn’t mean much to you, I only have one awesome song on a tape somewhere. I guess they liked having the word Crash in their name though, so they came up with this 3 track 7″ in rather strange plastic packaging.
They kick off on a very strange song indeed. “Zombie Lights” breaks out in a very subdued yet threatening fashion. Whiney vocals a la Radiohead, with rumbling drumming whilst the song builds up towards the point where it’s about to get loud. It develops into a sort of DC-ish style, getting more frantic by the second, vocals turn more desperate and the song gets faster. Mix Van Pelt with some Gravity sound for a pointer. Eventually the singer guy becomes screamer guy and the song is just pounding with harsh backup vocals and everything. Quirky. They head on into “Pink on the Inside” which is all over the shop. You can detect a Drive Like Jehu influence. Nice sudden time changes and lots of abruptness. It’s impressive that the guy can sing one minute, and suddenly break into hoarse throated screaminess the next. On the flipside of this scarlet vinyl is a longer song that lets the style develop. “Lava” starts off in a very hectic yet intricate fashion, screams to the forefront. Violent. Nice haunting break down too where they get some guitar FX going.
And that’s about all I can think of. Nice and original, if not downright amazing. It’s good, screamy, rocking post-hardcore stuff, if that’s your thang. In this case, it is mine.
