CUP388 - Arthur James Conspiracy - CD (1999)

Labels: No Karma
Review by: Russell Opie

Half hour long 7 tracker from this quintet. Emo-rock in the vein of Sunny Day Real Estate or Mineral. You didn’t think I knew that did you? No I just copied that from the Subjugation mail order listing. But this is a good record. A long player. This is the kind of thing that I can put on, and listen to forever and never get bored of.

They have the little chinky guitar solos that are the epitome of emo music. And it really is quite groovy. Vocals are quite quiet in the mix, up until the point where they get a little more emphasised. Guitars are drifty and melodic, up until the point that they rock out. Drums are slow and steadily paced, up until the point that they become faster and more erratic. You guessed it – this is your stereotypical emo-rock. But don’t get me wrong, there is nothing bad about that. Because I think that this is a neat little mini-album. One that I will always go back to.

Standout track for me is “don’t wake up”, which is the bands defining moment. This is a fucking great song. Really emotional and just so bloody fucking awesome. It has slower melodic moments and then it builds up into something really quite rocking, and then goes all slow and quiet again. Sounds a lot like something I have heard before, but I can’t quite place it. My memory is shot to hell right now. Sorry. They also have slower songs too, that remind me of Pop Unknown. I guess thats the Mineral link coming in there too. Once again, this is a nice record. Quite how nice it is I don’t really know. But hey, its just emotive melancholic rock man! If you dig that style of music, you would probably like this. I know I do.
