Darius Axis - s/t - 7

Oomf. The first song on this 7″ is wonderful. And the other 2 ain’t so bad either. I picked this one up based on a description (I forget what), as I have never heard of the band, but they appear to be from Gainesville. They certainly aren’t playing a prototypical G-Ville sound though. “at 6am” opens up this record in a distinctly Evergreen / Lumber-esque fashion. Are these guys and the Pine starting a revival? The song is slowish and has two vocalists, both are fairly whiney in that good ole indie/emo fashion. I guess it’s a bit more polished than both those bands, but it’s all good. It builds up into flourishing noisier parts where one of the vocalists goes all hoarse for a moment. Nice. The guitars bubble around, it’s all very clean cut but I am a sucker for this kind of thing.

“Daddy’s Tired” is the first song on side B and it’s similar stuff but a touch poppier, sort of Braid-ish I guess, but still with some cool moments that make me think of Lumber again. Pretty bouncy, and the dual vocals work really well. They then finish with “Sigmund Family Stitches” that is more urgent and rocking, very much like the fast Current stuff or Floodgate even! Top notch.

Also, they use the blotty extra black Royal Pain font in their insert. Emo bastards.
