David Lopan - demo - CDR (2003)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Way to make me thrilled to review your record guys. They only put a 1st class stamp on the envelope which was not enough and I had to go to the post office and pay a quid plus change for the priviledge of reviewing their screamy metal. Doofs.

This is 6 songs of screamy metal. I probably should have sent this to Tom but:

a) Tom hasn’t reviewed anything I have sent him for a fair while
b) I am not paying yet more money to send this record elsewhere

I really am not that familiar with the style of music as it’s not totally my thing, the vocals are quite good – harsh and throaty and they tail off quite nicely at times. Very similar to the vox on the Open Letters demo that I reviewed the other day. Alas, the chug of the guitars cuts no ice with me. They do have a fair few twinkly breakdowns that are no doubt infused in there through listening to various screamo records of the past few years and I enjoy these parts very much so. The intro to “This Past Decade” is well nice with it’s emo twinkling and talky vocals. And “Winter in Lisbon” recalls You and I towards the end. But after all that you’re still left with the metal. Or whatever it is. Metalcore? I have no idea. I just call it all metal, it’s easier. I guess they sound like bands such as Dispensing of False Haloes, if that helps any.

I come to the conclusion that if you do enjoy this style of music then David Lopan are probably going to kick your arse as they seem to be very competent at it, and the quiet / emo parts are dead good – I reckon they could totally pull off a Saetia / Spirit of Versailles type thing if they wanted. But they owe me a quid and change, so, meh.
