I like this single because it has a picture of a Boeing 73something on the front, I like aeroplanes. I think Death Cab had an album with aeroplanes in the title. I’m wandering. This is a cut from the latest album by these folks, an album that is really rather fine. It’s probably my favourite song on it too. A rousing indie rocker full of swirling atmospherics and layers upon layers of goodness. Great vocals, invigorating melodies and a nice amount of catchiness. The track builds up into noisier explosive moments where the sweeping guitar floods out in an almost shoegazey fashion, especially in the finale.
As this is one of them proper CD singles in a slimline case, we are treated to a demo version of another song, “Blacking Out the Friction”, which is sparse and wintery, with keyboards backing the echoing harmonised vocals. We end with “Flustered/Hey Tomcat”, um. It’s some kind of cut up / remix DJ thing. I think you’d be better off sticking to Prefuse 73 or whatever proper things you listen to in this style.
I still prefer Built to Spill, or the Wrens, but Death Cab have a happy knack for making enjoyable records “” the title track for this single is a very nice song. Did you know that people sometimes call this band emo though, what’s up with that shit?
