At first I wasnt taken that much with Devendra’s music, it was a tad to bluesy for me (or so I thought without really giving it a chance). When I saw him open for Michael Gira however he really opened up and I was very impressed.
He takes a very lo fi approach to writing his songs, to the extent of some of them being recorded onto answer phones.
The music itself owes much to artists such as Nick Drake and Pentangle as well as more old American artists like John Fahey and even the odd bluesy feel of someone like Muddy Waters. For somebody contemparery think Six Organs Of Admittance with vocals. It’s beautiful and fragile to the extent that some of the songs leave the hair on the back of my neck standing up.
This is my favourite of his records so far and in my opinion the best place to start (and luckily the cheapest too!).
