Discount - Open Ended Aerial - 7

Labels: Rugger Bugger
Review by: Andy Malcolm

This is good: 3 brand new and not available elsewhere than this Rugger Bugger 7″ songs from Discount. It’ll be even better if the songs are great.

The recording is a lot rawer than the “Half Fiction” album, giving it a bit more of a ‘punk’ feel. And first song “Slant Invention” also takes a fair bit of the pop out of the power pop. At times slow and meandering, with Alison’s vocals more vulnerable and fragile than before – giving it a slightly more indie style feel like something by Jejune or Rainer Maria. Then it crashes into a faster and noisier chorus. So it’s a bit different and can take some getting used to if you come in expecting something more upbeat sounding, but I’m sure you’ll come to the same conclusion as me – lovely, but very depressing.

Flick it for “Aerial”. Woo! Punk rock! Kind of dark sounding punk rock too, pretty simplistic old-time stuff, and again different from the last album. Agressive and powerful, Alison shouts. And to round out a varied package we have “Most Brutal Criminal”, which is an acoustic track with piano. Nice.

Well, what can you say – it’s Discount, and you should collect Discount. Get it.
