Labels: No Quarter – Southern Lord
Review by: Unknown
The second Earth release of the year and for the second time it is not the new Earth album. That is due later on this year under the Southern Lord banner and had been blessed with the title of Hex (Or printing in the Infernal Method). So in the mean time, after some digital preperation by Mr Carlson; a hand picked all star team of musicicans were let loose on on a selection of Earth originals. The cd was then pressed and released by No Quarter and by all accounts people have enjoyed it greatly. Now it is juggernaut that is Southern Lord who have tasked with pressing the material onto wax and distributing it to the masses. They have done a sterling job, So’ma has some serious game in the design world but this lp is a different level from anything I have ever seen before. I can’t even begin to make out what the hell it was originally or what the end goal was… But damn it is fucking amazing looking. So, let us have this screamo pirate annoy the stuck hippies and review these mixes without paying heed to the lineage or reputation of those involved.
Given that it is Southern Lord working this release, it is only fitting that their very own golden children open the show… Yes it is the almighty Sunn O))) opening the show with what could be a sunn O))) reworking of of Rule The Divine (Mysteria Caelestis Mugivi) rather than a remix of the original. Solid. Thrones And Dominions remix by Jim O’ Rourke is soft and floaty, after about ten minutes it starts threatening to get heavy but instead it just growls of a bit then slinks off. Nice. Harvey remixed by Justin Broadrick is annoying, something with the tones of the jewish harp sounding thing used in it are giving me a sore head, Next…
YES! Tibetan Quaaludes [Waveset Sloth Mix] has a really fucking gritty start to this Russell Haswel mix, and it just carries on that way. The whole thing is a ten minute dirge that just does not let up in anyway… Crushing. Which does not bode well for Autchre’s minimum touching up of of Coda Maestoso In F (Flat) Minor. meh. The final track is a glitched up headfuck of Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine by Mogwai and is a cool as fucking way to finish, earth seems to me to a band that would be at ease in the musical equipment of the 70’s brought up to date by these much loved Bucky Boys, Good Stuff.
Whilst many of us ‘new jacks’ have a bad taste in our earth pallatte, i.e. those that dropped hard cash into the well that is Josh Hunt’s soul in the desperate attempt to pick up earth2 and kk null split’s on wax… This record has certainly washed the dirt from my mouth. Shifting from the pained to the sublime this collection makes me so fucking amped for all new earth albums and has me pile my earth cd’s next to my stereo for some quality listening just after I sit through this lp again…
CD : No Quarter
Wax : Southern Lord (think they have pressed a bunch so it should be cool for everyone who wants one to get a copy!)
