Eighty Six - Raining and Falling - CD (2000)

Labels: Bombed Out Records
Review by: Ian Cavell

There were a few rumblings from Leeds last year that this new band called Eighty Six were good. Several months on, a debut EP on Bombed Out and yeah, its pretty fucking good!

‘raining and falling’ consists of five wonderful tracks of emotional punk-rock with a definite Jawbreaker/early Get Up Kids feel to the songs. The lyrics are of a personal nature but really well written with the kind of clever word play that can be found in your average Alkaline Trio tune. I think ‘Not As Warm As You’ and ‘Belloch’ are the strongest tracks, especially the latter which out of nowhere hauls down this immense guitar riff and couples it alongside some harsher vocals with great effect. And I love the way they manage to blend a great Chasing Amy sample into the end of the song so that it does actually sound like the beautiful Joey Lauren Adams is contributing these neat vocals to see the song out.

All in all, this is a really great EP by a great up and coming band. You’d be crazy to miss it.
