Drifting indie pop with a folksy bent, made for lazy days in the sun when there’s nothing much to do but rock back on your chair and watch the world trundle by. They make it over the hump of an incredibly naff opening line (“August is golden and we’re free/By free I mean everybody”) for a sweet enough slice of downbeat pop a la the Zephyrs, underscoring acoustic prettiness with a lilting bassline and ghostly layers of pedal steel guitar as hushed vocals are carefully draped over the top. On A Ship slips from the b-side, a slightly more optimistic number wounded mortally by an ill-advised brass accompaniment that reminds us why “jaunty” is such an awful word. Hardly the best way to round off a two-song showcase, but ho hum, at least the main attraction had its moments.
