Erast - Goodair - 12

Labels: Laboratory Instinct
Review by: Chris Bress

Having never heard of Erast previously I was a little surprised to have it pushed into my hands by a colleague professing it to be the “œbest record since selected ambient works”. On first listen I thought it was nice, but nowhere near as good as what I’d been led to believe. It sounded very typical with its almost Fennesz-like guitar drone intro and typical electronic string manipulation all under the spell of hypnotic drum flutters but if grew on me. It has some almost Spanish guitar licks, which combined with some of the beat patterns, reminded me of the incredible Luciano LP and the Mediterranean memories it conjured up. Unfortunately of the six tracks it’s only the first two that sound any better than other artists flirting with this style. The sixth track, a remix of the first, “œArgentina”, by Freeform is pretty good but not as instant as the original.
