New York City’s Ex Models write short songs. “Zoo Psychology”, their second “full length” record, has 15 of them and is over in 20 minutes. Their speed metal take on Devo, is quite possibly unlike anything else coming out of NYC at the moment and has gained them shows and tours with the likes of The Kills, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Pretty Girls Make Graves. This is a record which manages to be gloriously nerdy and dumb at the same time. Songs like Zoo Love, Hey Boner and Brand New Panties make Ex Models come accross like musics equivilant of an 8 year old telling knob jokes, but the overall tightness of the performance and slightly mathamatical structure of the songs are at times so hilariously over the top it’s hard to put into words unless you’ve heard them or seen them play live. They may not be pushing a sound that is 100% original in the grand scheme of things, but put alongside some of their New York contemporaries they sound fresh as fuck. Not bad for a bunch of freaks.
