FBCFabric - Who Are You - 10

Labels: Buttercuts
Review by: Chris Bress

This was a fucking great surprise! I haven’t heard any good left of center hip-hop for ages (save for the recent Edan and Murs LP’s but they’re pretty straight) and this is exactly that.

FBCFabric, fronted by Reindeer on the main cut, play music that’s not too dissimilar to Edit, Fridge, Lexaunculpt, Four Tet, Prefuse 73 and some of the better Anticon stuff like Themselves. The music is warm, Summer music with sweet organ drones and chilled beats, and MC Reindeer raps like a more poetic Mike Skinner. The music, although simple, flows beautifully almost like playing a Bach record too fast with a fluffy needle.

The b-side kicks off with some Nashville guitar slides slowed down to a near halt only to make sense when Reindeer starts flowing over the top behind the newly found crunch-beats. This track allows for the producer (or band “” I’ve done zilch research) to drag it out a bit, it doesn’t harm the quality one bit. “œDown the sides” concludes the single with what starts out sounding like Eno’s “œDiscreet Music” until a beat, anything but obnoxious, rolls over and over like waves over the sand on Margate beach.

This is Well Mint!
