I simply an unable to type this bands name without typing Fiver Fingers, Half A Hand. I haven’t the faintest idea why. Anyway, enough of my idiotic typo’s, lets talk about the music. Fiver (shit, I did it again) Fingers Half A Hand are some band I never heard of. I just bought a bunch of copies of this CD for distro because it sounded interesting. And it’s more than that. It’s fantastic. They play a very clean, melodic style of screamy emo which I haven’t heard for a while. I was a little perturbed the first time I put it on because the 1st track is an instrumental (nice though), and the 2nd one starts with some pretty chuggy stuff that is more like Thursday or something. But after that they really hit their stride, all the songs are powerful with surging moments and perfectly timed dropoffs. The vocals are yelled, screamed, garbled with a mouthful of airheads, spoken and cried. It has all the elements of top notch late 90’s bands that were doing this sort of thing (they are really similar to Portrait, I Hate Myself without any singy bits, or Staircase if you want something more up to date). The whole sound is summed up with songs like the third one which has a killer twinkle intro before it flies off the handle and it successfully eases between the two extremes as it meanders a long. Very, very nice. And I could mumble and gush about pretty much all the songs on here, but you don’t really want that to happen I am sure.
I really don’t have a bad word to say about this CD. I liked it the first time I put it on and with every subsequent listen it has grown on me, and now when I give it a whirl it simply blows me away. This is passionate, atmospheric music and if you at all like the late 90’s screamy emo scene, then you should pick this up as it is a perfect example of that style played well. This rocks. Big ups for the nice booklet and song explanations / thoughts too.
