Floor - s/t - LP (2002)

Labels: No Idea Records
Review by: Kunal Nandi

The claims of this band sounding “like a cross between Kyuss and Fugazi” got me really hard, I must say. I guess it isn’t totally unwarranted either, as Floor are heavy with some indie sensibilities, but the fact of the matter is that Floor don’t really sound like anyone else, which is amazing frankly. For a start, they are gobsmackingly heavy, which may not be that original, but bear with me for god’s sake. I am talking real heavy. Proper sludgy stuff, never getting fast, and often going painfully slow. When the first bars of “Scimitar” drop – all mid-tempo pounding drums and a severely downtuned one-note riff – it’s like a cartoon anvil on your head. And then – this is the weird bit – one of the dudes starts singing! Quite sweetly too! Not exactly in tune much of the time, but it’s not screamed or anything. The whole effect is really quite odd, but refreshing, and a hell of a lot of fun to listen to.

In 7 words: Floor are a dayglo Electric Wizard – wicked!
