Former Cellmates - Hustle - CD (2005)

Labels: Newest Industry
Review by: Alex Deller

A slight diversion from the familiar Newest Industry sound here, keeping a good chunk of the time-honoured Leatherface/HWM vibe intact whilst wiping a big smear of cock about its rock, mining the 70s for extra kicks and coming up with something a touch different in the process.

Mixing workmanly melodic chugs and husky vocals with such verboten tricks as wah-wah’d guitar leads, clanking cowbells and occasional Danzigesque sneers it’s easy to imagine these chaps whipping up a storm in dingy dives the nation over, aiding and abetting many a hangover-to-be with their raucous punk n’ roll.

Whilst the rock in itself is decent enough (if not worthy of the Turbonegro/Mudhoney namedrops peppering the promo bunk), Hustle does tend to falter along its merry way thanks to some truly diabolical lyrics. It’s a rare day indeed where I recommend detaching your brain while the music plays, but with lines like “œthat’s such a pretty dress you’re wearing/it’s a shame that you’re so hairy” ringing shamefully loud and clear it’s pretty much mandatory if cringe-free listening is preferred.
