Four Tet - Smile Around the Face - CD (2005)

Labels: Domino
Review by: Chris Bress

Four Tet makes perfect Summer festival music, bridging the gap between breaking hip-hop and electronica as well as chucking in free-jazz licks and folk structure – he’s got it all. Unfortunately I’ve never seen him play a great set. When he played at that all nighter in London, with Matthew Dear, Fennesz and Animal Collective to name a few, he played the best I’ve seen him. Maybe it was the bad boys, maybe it was the heat and the excitement of being around a load of mates I hadn’t seen for ages, I dunno, but he was pretty good! This new track kicks off with some hefty hip-hop beats with shuddering sped up cartoon style noises underneath. The use of crashing cymbals and the uplifting chorus would surely leave a massive crowd of punters eager for more. The injection of a bit of energy into Four Tet’s music increases the quality tenfold. His best stuff yet.
