Gameface - Douglas - Pinto - split - 7

Labels: Speedowax
Review by: Ian Cavell

Speedowax just keep these limited 7″s coming… and this one’s even more limited than usual (only 150). This time around you get three bands doing covers although Beauty School Dropout who were due to have a song on here didn’t quite make it to the final pressing. Taking their place is Douglas who offer up the Jawbreaker cover, ‘Boxcar’. I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never heard the original so Douglas could have bastardized it for I know. Still sounds pretty good, mind, and a fair indication of what you can find on their album, ‘Persona’. Melodic punk with a slight US flavour, their album is superb by the way.

Gameface make another appearance on the Speedowax label, this time with ‘Time after Time’. Which is good (as you’d expect from a band of their caliber) but I’m afraid Hooton 3 Car have already recorded the definitive cover of that particular song. And bringing up the rear is a band who I’ve pretty much ignored over the past year, namely Pinto. They cover the Parasites on this release and it’s actually really good quality pop-punk. I’m guessing, though, that its because the original song is good rather than Pinto who have always struck me as being pretty average.

Not an essential release by an means but good songs on ultra limited coloured vinyl is always welcome.
