Belated review of Gunmoll’s recent effort on No Idea. If you don’t know what Gunmoll sound like, you are missing out on some great melodic punk Gainesville style. If you are a fan already, you are gonna be pleased with this bands progress. This LP is a bit more relaxed than I thought it would be, but they pull it off real good. I find this with pop punky bands, first few records, usually full of energy but the LPs arn’t really composed as albums, just a collection of tunes that just happen to have been finished around the same time. Jawbreaker is a great example of this, if you take the transition from Unfun (a scrappy and melodic affair) to Bivouac (a darker, more sombre effort with songs that all make sense together). With “Anger management…” Gunmoll have done the very same thing, in fact musically it reminds me of the said Jawbreaker lp, also of later Leatherface, especially those awesome gruff vocals (it never gets old!). Lots of mid tempo punk rock here with minor scales and big chunky guitars, it’s been tried and tested, this style still rocks it, let’s hope No Idea keeps the melodic punk world alive, because the Gainesville scene can’t really do wrong!
