To say this record is a little un-expected is an understatement, seriously. They wear Bane hoodies, they are signed to Deathwish Inc, but they play, what i believe is known amongst students as ‘alt country’ music, that’s right.
So is it a bunch of guys trying to show just how interesting they are or the real deal? I think, the latter, there’s no big ‘ex members of…’ factor or anything like that which i guess is what you would expect when a label like DW releases a record like this (see, b9’s Sinners and Saints or the hundreds of emo related ones), just a record which deserves to be judged on it’s own merits (yes I am aware of the slight irony here so don’t bother pointing it out, thanks.)
The music itself is a nice warm sounding set of songs with a darker lyrical bent than you might realise initially when listening and has a strange black hearted romance about it, and even a little humour, which really is what I want from something like this, picks of the bunch of are slower songs for me like ‘Amy’ and ‘Lorna’ (not all the songs have girls names) which I think, the latter particularly, I’d find quite comforting after the death of a relative or something, and yeah that is a pretty odd thing to say but it’s what the lyrics seem to be about in a reflecting-but-not wallowing sense…
If I could change anything I think the singer perhaps needs a slightly rougher voice but in general I recommend this, I wonder what kind of bands they end up playing with?
Awesome band name too!
