This is one of the more elusive releases of the past year or so. I tried several times to acquire a copy, only for Alex Deller to step in and save the day in the end.
The Troy were a consistently good band over their lifetime, and this fret they throw here is as good as anything else they did. Distraught and sob ridden emo that blends the melodic side of Yaphet Kotto and the chaotic efforts of I, Robot to create a lengthy song that does a real good job with the style. They mix harsh crying and desperate talky singing on here to great effect. This is the last thing they released I think (and it was actually recorded in 2001), but it doesn’t have those strange atmospheric parts that they scattered amidst some of their other songs. This band seemed to slip under the radar for quite a few, but as fas as I am concerned, all of their output was top notch – I wouldn’t be surprised if in a few years time this band is “re-discovered” by the kids and their records turn into ebay gold. Prevent that by listening to them now.
Fork and Knife are a band I am completely unfamiliar with and they offer up two songs on their side, doing some similar crazed outbursts to the Troy. The production is thin, meaning the energy gets a bit lost in the distortion, but it is still pretty good. Kind of a cross between Saetia and older 12 Hour Turn is how I would describe it. They have dual vocalists spitting it all out, sadly they don’t make me want to listen to them very often as the words at the end of the first song appear to be “shut your fucking mouth you stupid fucking bitch”. Very clever eh? Maybe I am mishearing it. Oh well. I am not really inspired to recommend the band after that.
