This is an enjoyable bite-sized (so long as you are not Jaws out of James Bond) sized introduction to an enjoyable band out of California it does appear. It’s 4 tracks long, though the 4th is an instrumental version of the first song, “Stitches”. And that first song is the best on show, it’s a wandering, subtle post-rock number with spoken ‘telephone’ vocals. It’s kind of like a more melodic cross between Slint and later Van Pelt, and nowhere near as dark as either. It works really well. Late night sounding and pleasant. There is additional instrumentation to vary things, though it ends very suddenly. “My Headphones Are Broken” (no they are not) is the best Christie Front Drive impression I have heard in forever, if only it had some vocals. The guitar sound is virtually indentical to CFD, as is the song structure. I have no idea if it is intentional, but I am not complaining. I just wish it had vocals. Very nice jangling guitars and build ups. Where’s Eric? Song 3 is “Math Rock Spy Hunter” (Spy Hunter!!! great game, if a little repetetive), and it is also instrumental. And it’s a little mathy as the title suggests. OVerall it is a pleasant, guitar based number that rocks out at times. Nice.
So yeps, decent lil CD. Would be nice to hear what they do next. Oh, and apparently the ‘live’ version of this band features a member of Gameface! Which you wouldn’t expect.
