I want to go to Canada and major in ice hockey. Now I want to go to Canada and see these bands. Thank you Ache Records.
Hot Hot Heat return with 5 new tracks of their brand of dark/no/new wave. And when someone mentions dark wave/no wave/new wave whatever… one word comes to mind. Keyboards. They gave an outstanding impression on their 7″ and continue to do so on this split. The first 2 tracks in particular made me wish my turntable had a special stylus that would repeat these tracks over and over. Lyrically, they’re nonsense. “Better eat the lion before the lion eats you”. Actually, that made a lot of sense. Anyhow, it’s a rocking journey with repetitous drones and rythms, and more dancey than before. A high recommendation for fans of The Rapture, The VSS and the likes.
On the flipside, we see the debut of The Red Light Sting. They play real fast and sound real good. An orgy with The Blood Brothers, The Crimson Curse and Camera Obscura I’d say…mmm yeahhh…. Truly displaying and exploiting their potential on these 6 tracks. ‘Baconated Grapfruit’ prologues with awesome drumming and throbbing basslines (strangely reminiscent of Swing Kids) breaking down into many different structures with leanings of The Locust. ‘And in Hot Dogs! Hot Dogs!’, the dude RAAA’s it up then lulls into a moment of “…everybody wants to be my baby…” crashing into a super groovy synth-riff and a horde of effects ala The Faint. So much rock from this band. Can’t wait to hear more from these kids.
