I’m kinda worried if this a joke emo band or something and that I have fallen for it. Because no-one plays emo this good these days, they have some fucking awesome songs on here, and just look at the name. Emo cliché or what? And the hand built packaging doesn’t exactly help things. The booklet has pictures of kids and a boat, 2 obvious emo subjects, and they have a song which is the best September rip off of all time. But this 7″ is FUCKING AMAZING.
Side A kicks off with emo in pure old school twinkle-fest style, long and meandering, melancholy and beautiful at one time, without ever breaking into the vocals, apart from a whispered line to finish on. Then we have the following song which crushes in a Constatine Sankathi-esque way. Strained shouty vocals over the grooving melodic music that throws the body into spasms. Throw in shouty-spoken parts and I am rolling on the floor, clutching my hair and”¦ no, I’m not really, but I like to think I am that emo. “I would rather be ashes than dust”. Yo.
And the flipside. Oh my goodness, it’s kitchen knife to the wrist time and who cares about the mess, this is one of the best emo songs of the past 10 years and so what if it didn’t come out in 1994, just listen. Fast and rocking, yet desperate and tender all in one, check Current meets September and then some. “HELP ME! HELP ME! HELP ME! HELP ME!” it kicks in before proceeding to one of the most beautiful twinkle sections you’ll ever hear, stand the hairs up on the back of my neck why don’t you. Now slide into the sway and you’ve locked me down, I’m a slave to the cause, it’s brutal. “And there’s no-one left to hold my hand.” If you can get up off the floor after this one beats you down, you’re a better person than I. This is my emo, you can keep your Deep Elm, I’m not interested..
Everything winds up on a track which I can only described as Navio Forge goes pop punk. Desperate vocals and a fast melodic song structure. It’s actually really cool, but doesn’t particularly fit in with that other song.
Find this. It’s almost perfection.
