I Hate Myself - 3 songs - LP (2005)

Labels: No Idea Records
Review by: Joe Caithness

Wow. Basically. Wow. IHM were one of the greatest 90s Emo bands and really kept it raw when that style kinda went off an a tangent, for better or for worse. Well the two forming brothers of the band decieded they had some material left in them and No Idea, their faithful label in the 90s, decieded to press it. If there is an emo god, he’s feeling the faith today!

I will describe their sound to you in case you’ve never heard them before. They are called I Hate Myself, and that’s basically how they sound, very pathetic to the point it’s ironic, slow churning, off key singing working it’s way into screeches. And if you haven’t already noticed, we love this shit at the Cee Zee.

I have to admit, two days ago I downloaded this onto my Mp3 player because I couldn’t wait for the vinyl, and I think I counted 25 listens and this morning I got a package from No Idea and my god do I feel like a boy with a new toy. Lovely purple swirl vinyl (similar to the pressing of the LP from a year or two ago for all you nerds), the record is one sided and on the A side with the grooves you have the record name and catalogue number etc, and on the other side you have the credits and a little note :

“Do something, remember everything, For example when you were young and you wanted to see and save the world, things will get better with some small effort: lightning struck Roy Sullivan seven times”

This is one of the most inspirational pieces of music that has ever hit my turntable, just so perfect in so many ways, they could have so easily lost their legacy by releasing something new, but I can honestly say this is my favourite I Hate Myself record right now. I keep spinning this record and I haven’t done that for years, and I don’t see me stopping soon.

NB: Record Theme: All 3 track titles are about a chap called Roy Sullivan and Lightning. Roy Sullivan holds the Guiness Book of Records award for “most times struck my lightning and lived” of which he was struck 7 times, the front of the record is a picture of him naked dancing in lightning. Roy died in 1983.
