Independent Thought Alarm - s/t - CDR (2004)

These guys are from Norwich although I have never actually encountered them live, though friends have often had

positive things to say about them. This is a 3 track cd of pretty techy hardcore with a mix of screamy and sung

vocals. The sung vocals are pretty wavery and out of tune for the most part which doesn’t help, and the music is

way more technical than I personally am into (my preference being for bands that can’t play their instruments

properly), but the band appear pretty capable in the genre that they inhabit. The songs are structured well and

the screamy parts where the instruments go all out are pretty intense too. The first track completely changes

direction in an emo fashion, with a nice quiet breakdown part that helps relieve the tension before building up a

little more. I really liked this part a lot! The second song returns to the frenzied screamy hardcore, it kind of

reminds me of the earlier stuff that We Close Our Eyes did, although again they throw in a nice subtle break with

slightly jazzy guitars (particularly on the groove of the bass) which works well, the mis-hit vocals work a lot

better on these parts I find. Track 3 really takes the twinkly bits even further with a super nice elongated

intro (there is some delightful mid-westness going on here), and then they throw that intro in the bin by going

into the techy hardcore and harsh screaming. Oh well. Some more nice twiddly bits return later on though.

This is a really solid band although personally I think I would enjoy them more if they stuck to the excellent,

quiter more brooding moments rather than the tech. That’s just me though, I’m a pansy.
