Isis - the Red Sea - LP (1999)

Labels: Second Nature
Review by: Martin Brown

A combination of curiosity sparked by recommendations and I suppose downright naivety have allowed this CD to come into my life. And frankly this is NOT what I enjoy listening to normally. This is slow, brooding, brutal metal / grind core. The vocals are deep, distorted grunts, whilst the guitars sound like chainsaws hacking the speakers to death from the inside, backed by a pulsating, powerful bass, pounding drums and, earth shattering cymbal mish-mashes. This is a complete ear drum battering experience, but at the core of ISIS is something more than other grind bands, and that is true, heart rendering emotion, akin to shouty emo/hc bands such as STRIKEFORCE DIABLO, TWELVE HOUR TURN and PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS. This is an inspirational CD, allowing us to see the beauty that can be born out of painful music. This is where THE SWARM and COALESCE both fear to tread, and shits on each band in the process. I’m glad I got this.
