M’good buddy Cavell (THE CREATOR) was in the house yesterday evening and we were just talking about shit and stuff when he mentioned that this band Jeniferever were playing Norwich and whether he or I was going. So I said probably not but hey, I have this CD by the band that got sent by the review so we could check it out and see if it’s any good and if it was, we’d both go see them. About 20 minutes later the CD was on the second of it’s four tracks and me and Cavell were talking about the Wildhearts or something like that, and this CD was still going. It’s kind of quiet we agreed, sort of nice and all that, long epic songs, but it never quite seems to get going. Nice background music, but not really the sort of band we would be that excited by live, as the build ups never quite seem to take the songs into explosive territory. It’s kind of a bit like if Owen made songs that were 10 minutes long or something. And personally that is not a thought that turns me on. Wandering, elongated indie /post-rock with pleasant twinkly guitars, occasional horn-y inteludes, soft Mike Kinsella-esque vocals, lots of gentle swaying back and forth in a typical post-rock manner – all solid ingredients but without the burst of specialness that would put it over the top. I’d rather listen to Rachel’s, and so would you if you knew what was what.
Nice. That’s the operative word here. Nice but ultimately ineffectual. If you go see them live, I would suggest that you take a chair, plus a good book. Or just go play pool in the back room. Plus they have a really horrible band name that makes me feel ill. Still, the music is nice.
