Labels: Seriously Groovy
Review by: Andy Malcolm
Hey it’s a real life CD single like put out in a slimline case and stuff. I had forgotten these things existed! The slimline case had been fucked to buggery in the post, but not to worry, the CD was intact and it is now in my CD player where it is making tunes go on wires and fall out of speakers, ooh-wee-ooh.
This 3 tracker did not sound much like I expected. In fact, all 3 songs sound like completely different bands. How peculiar. Maybe it is some 3 way comp inside joke and I am totally baffled. But probably not. The first song is called “Donnie” (named for my Grandfather? or Darko? perhaps Donovan McNabb? I hope it’s the latter, but if it is the former I am way disturbed) and it is an endearingly polished indie-pop effort. It sounds like it was recorded in FM. I am not used to my stereo playing music that sounds this well produced, in fact, I kicked it a couple of times because I thought it was playing up. Turns out it wasn’t. If I haven’t already established, this is really really poppy, really simple and short, it has hand claps and ba-ba-ba-ba-ba backups. I think in it’s genre I prefer more lo-fi indie-pop stuff like Tiger Trap or Dressy Bessy, but this is tastefully pleasant and summery. Ripe for radio play! In FM! After that we get 2 more tracks, “Cats in Heaven” has cool lyrics and is a folksy / countrified effort that was more along the lines of what I was expecting on this CD. Strumsty-strum. I like it. Last up is “Synd” which is a bloody long instrumental post-rock thing so I will haphazardly mention Aerial M, just for kicks. Puzzling! Not bad mind you.
Well, uh, a 3 track cd-single! If you buy cd singles, and like a bit of variation on them, try this one out. Just don’t kick your stereo. You might, say, break your foot or something.
